Wilmington

In 1800, Eleuthère Irénée du Pont emigrated to the US from France and by 1802 had begun manufacturing gun powder in a mill on the Brandywine River. The DuPont company had become a major supplier of the U.S. military. The area saw its greatest growth during the Civil War, though officially a member of the Union, Delaware was a border state and support was divided between Confederate and Union causes. The war created an increased demand for materials supplied through Wilmington including gunpowder, ships, railroad cars, and shoes. By 1868, Wilmington was producing more iron ships than the rest of the U.S. combined, also rating first in the production of gunpowder and second in the manufacturing of carriages and leather. The prosperity during this time lead to the expansion of the residential boundaries with large homes on tree-lined streets. Both World Wars stimulated the city’s industries. Industries vital to the war effort – shipyards, steel foundries, machinery, and chemical producers – operated around the clock. By the 1980s, job growth and office construction were spurred by the arrival of national banks and financial institutions. Today, many national and international banks, including Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, and Barclays, have operations in the city.
