Located on the central coast Jersey Shore in Monmouth County, Asbury Park was ranked 6th best beach in New Jersey in the 2008 Top 10 Beaches Contest. Asbury Park was originally incorporated on March 26, 1874 from portions of Ocean Township, and incorporated as a city on March 25, 1897. From 2002 onward, the rest of Asbury Park has been enduring a cultural, political, and economic revival, including a burgeoning industry of local and national artists. The downtown district is undergoing a revitalization effort with many of the empty blocks overlooking the beach and boardwalk are slated for massive reconstruction. In 2013 Asbury Park was one of the few beach communities to open successfully for the summer season after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Former President Barack Obama and Governor Chris Christie helped host an official reopening ceremony on Memorial Day Weekend 2013 during which the “Stronger Than The Storm” motto was emphasized.
