Delaware County was created on September 26, 1789 from a portion of Chester County and was named after the Delaware River. The Delaware River was named in honor of Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr who was Governor of the English colony of Virginia. Originally discovered in 1609 by Henry Hudson, the area now colloquially as Delco was variously claimed and settled by Swedes, Dutch, and English; however the original inhabitants of the area were of the Lenni-Lenape tripe.
