Phoenixville

Phoenixville was initially settled in 1732 and was incorporated in a borough in 1849. In the early 20th century, Phoenixville experienced its industrial heyday as an important manufacturing center and the site of great iron and steel mills like the Phoenix Iron Works, boiler works, silk mill, underwear and hosiery factories, a match factory, and the famous and highly collectible Etruscan majolica pottery. Phoenixville owes a lot of its growth to its waterways like the Schuylkill River, a historic passageway for Native Americans and early settlers, as well as the fast-flowing French Creek which bisects the area and was quickly harnessed for waterpower.
